Obituary for William J. Johnson, Jr.

William J. Johnson, Jr., 88 a lifetime resident of Oglesby died at 8:13 p.m. July 14, 2019 in his home following a brief illness.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be 12 noon Saturday August 3, 2019 at the Oglesby Elk’s Lodge. Pastor Jack McConaghie will officiate. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until time of services at the lodge. Full military honors will be conducted by the LaSalle-Oglesby Veteran’s Memorial Group. The Oglesby Elks to mmet in the lodge at 11 a.m. The Oglesby American Legion to meet in the lodge at 11:15 a.m.

Shields Funeral Chapel, Oglesby is in charge of arrangements.

Bill was born July 20, 1930 in Peru to William and Florence (Lyness) Johnson. He married Carol Cushing August 29, 1954 in Virogua, WI. She died November 13, 2012.

Bill was a model maker at Westclox and later at ALM as a machinist. He was a member of the Oglesby Union Church and graduated from LaSalle-Peru Township High School in 1948.

Bill served on the City of Oglesby Planning Commission and was involved with Oglesby Little League and BB gun Club. He was also a member of the Oglesby American Legion.

Bill was very active in the Oglesby Elk’s where he was a charter member and served two times as Exalted Ruler. Bill loved the Tuesday night card games and playing golf with his Elk buddies. He was also very active with the fish fries as well as organizing card games and outings at the LaSalle Veteran’s Home. He was also a mainstay for the Elk’s Crippled Children’s Clinic.

Bill was a Senior Air Mechanic in the U.S. Air Force serving in Iceland and Madison, WI from 1951 to 1955.

He is survived by 3 children; Michael (Susan) Johnson of LaSalle, Peggy Johnson of Oglesby and Mark (Cindy)Johnson of Dalzell, 6 grandchildren; Jennifer (Anthony) Eubanks of Kalamazoo, MI, Christopher (Brittany) Johnson of LaSalle, Aubree Niemiec of Grasonville, MD, Alec Niemiec of Wilkes-Barre, PA, Jessica (Matt) Hoover of New Lenox and Sara Johnson of Chicago, 4 great-grandchildren; Elija and Timothy Eubanks, Wyatt Hoover and Willa Johnson and a sister Kitty (David) Wrobleski of Oglesby.

He was preceded in death by his wife and 2 brothers Hank and Rick Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Elk’s Crippled Children’s Fund.
